This 4 day of Feb 1925

My thoughts:
I discovered this Trust Deed using the Full-Text Search at FamilySearch.org.  The summary and the transcription offered up in the side panel were riddled with errors so I didn't include it in this post. I am glad to have found this.  I plan to look at that period in Will's life and determine what was happening.
I love seeing what my Great Uncle Will(W.B. Jakes) owned and it's an added bonus that in the process of giving the location of the property used to secure the note, it tells where he lived.
John L Jakes who signs is Will's brother, and James Jakes is their father
E P Leach was a merchant and carriagemaker who lived in Rutherford Co TN.  I believe this is why the heading says Rutherford Co TN immediately before this deed in the book.  To me, that would mean the deal was made in Rutherford but the property that secured the note was in Bedford Co TN(Will's county of residence.  Could this also be recorded in the Rutherford Co TN Deed books...I'll have to check that out.

Don't Neglect Researching the More Recent Past

I obtained a digital copy of my Dad's 1st cousin's will by calling the county clerk's office two years ago. At the time I didn't have a working printer so I had not printed a copy out to put in my Cooke Jakes Archives Binder. I took care of that today. Cousin Hazel had no children of her own so the will was pretty straightforward. She was the only child of my paternal grandmother's brother John Jakes.  Great Uncle John had been a barber in Murfreesboro, TN. He passed away in 1937 when my Dad was really young thus Dad didn't have many memories to pass on concerning his Uncle John or his cousin Hazel who was 10 years his senior. People fall out of touch when there are deaths in the family and such was the case with my grandmother Pearl Jakes Cooke and her deceased brother's daughter Hazel.

I knew that she had married into the Jetton family but pretty much nothing else. When I was writing the article about my great-grandparents James Jakes and Annie Frizzell and their descendants, I found out more about her life. I wish I'd had the Full-text search that is offered in the FamilySearch Labs on FamilySearch.org at the time I was writing that piece.  It's probably just as well though as I am uncovering oodles of info and that would have been too much for the paper article which had already pushed the limit for inclusion in the quarterly.

The important point I want to make is that we shouldn't overlook researching our more recent relatives, such as parents, grandparents, their 1st cousins, and 1st cousins once removed. This is particularly important if you are using DNA research and want to identify matches on your DNA list. While there are privacy laws, there are still many public records that can be accessed through requests or by searching newspapers and directories. Be sure to explore the Full-text Search for those more recent ancestors and cousins.  It may give you ideas for additional places to search for information.

Nancy Harger Jakes Applies for Bounty Land

James Jakes 1788–1847
BIRTH 10 FEB 1788 • Franklin Co., Virginia, USA
DEATH 05 SEP 1847 • Bedford Co., Tennessee, USA
My 3rd great-grandfather, James Jakes married Nancy Harger on 29 MAY 1806 in Franklin Co., Virginia, USA  They have one unknown F under 10 in household during 1810 census In which they are in Franklin Co VA near John Jakes--James’ father. Their son George Jakes was my 2nd great Grandfather and was born in 1820 in Franklin Co VA. I do not have the census for them that year(1820.) The family was in Bedford Co TN by the time of son James Jakes’ birth in 1825 and the remainder of their children were born in TN. There are a good bit of descendants from John Jakes son of James & Nancy Harger Jakes so more work has been done on his line.

I had no idea that James served in the War of 1812. I just happened to do a search on the surname Jakes at the BLM site and found the listing below.  I would recommend checking the BLM GLO site to see if any of your ancestors applied for and received a warrant but opted to sell it.

Looking at the individual entries it appears that James serviced under Capt Jones in the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812. Nancy filed for bounty land under the 1850 Act as well as the 1855 Act and sold the warrants as many did. I have copies of the Land Entry Case Files. I placed an order for Nancy's Bounty Land Applications but the Archives couldn't locate it and feel like it is either lost or misfiled. Many times the Bounty Land Applications are placed in with the pension files but with neither James nor Nancy applying for a pension that did not happen in this case.

Deeds of Heirs of David Frizzell--Bedford Co. TN

Those researching David W Frizzell and wife, Rebecca Manley will be interested in the following deeds.  David and Rebecca had at least 11 children. David and Rebecca are my 2nd Great Grandparents(the maternal grandparents of my paternal grandmother)

Receipt from Dr. Andrew Hollabaugh, M.D.

Two of the items in the Cooke/Jakes Family Archives binder are receipts from where my grandmother was a patient of Dr. Andrew Hollabaugh.  This particular one is from 23rd of August 1962.  There is another one dated 14th March 1963.  Dr. Hollabaugh suffered a fatal heart attack on the 7th of April 1963.

A few interesting items about Dr. Hollabaugh:

  • Medical Degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine(1926)
  • Post Graduate Work at Nashville General & New York Poly Clinic Hospital.
  • Eye, Ear, Nose, & Throat specialist(1929)
  • He had also been an instructor at Vanderbilt Medical School in addition to being a member of the Nashville Academy of Medicine, Davidson County Medical Association and American Medical Association.
  • Member of Phi Beta Pi fraternity
  • Member of St. George's Episcopal Church
  • Buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville(which is also where my grandmother is buried)
If you are interested in knowing more about my Cooke/Jakes Family Archives binder you can read more about it in my post from 4 years ago entitled "Just a Small Portion of a Family's Paper Trail."

Dad's Maternal 1st Cousins--1950 US Federal Census

In a blog post I made in April, I listed the citations of the 1950 census entries for Dad, his siblings and a number of his paternal 1st cousins. I am doing the same of his maternal 1st cousins for this post.  A link to the Enumeration Districts is also included after each citation.  I didn't hyperlink the web addresses so you will need to copy and paste the url into your browser. This will be a great help to me when I read thru the districts again. When no one was at home a revisit was required and those revisits are listed at the end of each enumeration district.  The sheet #s for the revisit sections start with 71 to set them apart from the initial walk thru.  See this informative post at HistoryHub.

School reports are of value if they help parents understand the meaning of practices in school and the opinion of the school of the child's progress. We want each child to compete with his own record, not with those of other children. Therefore teachers and parents must avoid comparing the child with other children in class and home.

The school desires to help each child become a worthy member of the group, use his leisure time constructively, and master the school subjects.

James Jakes Death Notice(1941)

I'd written a blog post about finding my great grandfather's death notice in the Tennessean back in 2017(see post) Today I found a death notice in the Shelbyville paper.  The Tennessean had gotten several of the daughters names wrong.  Cora Gibson was printed as Mrs. Coy Gibson and Lula Gibson was shown as Mrs. Luke Gibson.  They also spelled my grandmother's married name as Cook instead of Cooke.  The Shelbyville paper got the names correct except for my Grandmother's married name.  They put Gibson instead of Cooke.  I think it's worth noting that this happens more than we realize.  I've even seen people who have been dead for almost 20 years listed as survivors in their sibling's death notice.  I've made a note on the image of the death notice below.  You should be able to identify these errors as you are researching because you will have multiple sources and you will need to evaluate the sources and the information contained in them.

James M. Jakes(b. 02 May 1857-d. 15 Aug 1941) --52 Ancestors

My favorite find happened when the 1940 US Federal Census was released in 2012.  I located my paternal grandparents living exactly where I knew they would be in Old Hickory. To my surprise, my grandmother Pearl Jakes Cooke's dad, James Jakes was living with them.  I didn't even know he was still living and that time.  I'd searched for James' death certificate but did not have access to many records in my early research.   I knew that he had outlived his wife and I'd had her death certificate(from 1920) and information about her stone in the Willow Mount Cemetery.  His gravestone did not have his date of death either(and still doesn't.)  So I assumed he'd passed and went on to easier research for the time being.   I wonder what surprises the 1950 Census will bring me when it is released in a few months.  This also serves to remind me that I need to get his probate file which I have not found yet. He died the following year and I found his death certificate shortly after finding him in the that 1940 census.  I hope to do more research on him and also his children as we have some Jakes cousins showing up in our DNA research that I've not been able to place on the tree just yet.

Initial Searches May Return Additional Relevant Results

From the Old Hickory Social News column in The Tennessean(Nashville TN) of Thur. December 12th 1940 page 12.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Jakes have as their guests Mrs. Jakes' brother, T. C. Dean and Mrs. Dean of Wilmington, Del.

I just happen to know who these folks are.  W. B. Jakes is William Bryan Jakes Sr(my paternal Great Uncle).and his wife Georgia Dean Jakes.  Georgia is also kin to me --a 3rd Cousin once removed thru her Dean--Snelling--King connection.  Her brother mentioned here is Thomas Clayton Dean along with his wife, Alice Lurline Prather Dean.

Listing couples as Mr & Mrs. under the husbands name and in this case just initials is something I've seen in newspapers a great deal during the period from the 1920s to 1960s. Be sure to check for those you are researching listed this way especially during the first half of the 20th century.

Jakes Siblings in Delayed Certificate of Birth Database

Searching for siblings of Pearl G. Jakes Cooke(my paternal grandmother) in the TN Delayed Certificate of Birth database

Pearl's sister, Katherine "Kitty" Jakes Bell filed hers in February of 1957.  The documents she used for her supporting evidence were:

  1. Old Family Bible(could it have been the same one my grandmother used?)
  2. The Original(Delayed)Birth certificate of sister(my grandmother who got hers 6 years earlier)
  3. The Original Birth Certificate of Child:  her son James Benjamin "J.B." Bell
Pearl's sister, Fannie Cora Jakes Gibson filed hers in November of 1951 less than 2 weeks after my grandmother filed for her delayed certificate of birth.  The documents Cora used for her supporting evidence were:
  1. Old Family Bible
  2. Original Death Certificate of Sister--Ella Ruby Jakes Pirtle(my grandmother also used this document)
  3. Original Birth Certificate of Child--Delayed Certificate with her Affidavit as Mom showing age
  4. Original Birth Certificate of Child--Preston Cartwright Gibson
I tried searching for the Delayed Certificate of Birth(Item #3 above) by the number(listed on Cora's doc), as keyword, and browsing(using the year and month of birth and looking for the Cert. # within each year for each of Cora's children) but was never able to locate it so I could see which child's document she used.

Pearl's brother, Frank Euless Jakes filed his in January of 1942.  The documents Euless used for his supporting evidence were:
  1. Affidavit of Andrew L Gibson(brother in law who married sister Cora)
  2. Affidavit of J. W. Drake
  3. Old Bible Record
The affidavits are on the back of the document.  Andrew L. Gibson's affidavit states, "I was present when Frank Euless Jakes was born.  I lived near the home of his parents at the time of his birth."  J W Drake's affidavit states, "I lived on the adjoining farm with the registrant's father and mother at the time of his birth.  My wife was present when Frank Euless Jakes was born.  I visited him immediately after his birth"

Pearl's brother, William Bryan Jakes filed his in  December of  1941.  It looks like he and Euless began gathering their paperwork around the same time but that Will's was completed first.  The documents Will used for his supporting evidence were:
  1. Affidavit of Andrew L Gibson(husband of his sister Cora)
  2. Affidavit of Jim Drake
  3. Old Bible Record
The affidavits given for Will's application are identical to those used for Euless with the exception of the name.  The statement by the non-relative J.W. Drake makes me wonder if his wife helped delivered Will and Euless or if she was just there supporting Annie.

I have not yet found Pearl's sister,  Lula Jakes Gibson's application for a delayed certificate of birth.  She passed in  1977 and I would think should have had one. She was widowed in 1929 under tragic circumstances and never remarried.  Pearl's siblings Ruby and John died in 1934 and 1937 respectively which was likely before the need for a birth certificate.  I did search for them within the database and couldn't find an entry for either of them.

Pearl Gray Jakes Cooke--TN Delayed Certificate of Birth

My paternal grandmother was born in 1891 in Bell Buckle, Bedford County, Tennessee, USA.  The state of Tennessee did not began keeping birth records statewide until 1908.  It was 1951 before my grandmother applied for her delayed certificate which means she was 60 years old at the time of her application.

It's interesting to see what documents are used for evidence.  The image below shows what my grandmother used.  I've marked thru the certificate number and the date for item 2 because it is that of my Aunt Bobbie who is still living.  I left the date on the column to the far right which is the date the original document was made which can vary a good bit from the date of birth.

  1. Original Family Bible--I have no clue where this Bible is but think it would most likely be that of James Jakes, Pearl's father.  He died 10 yrs prior to her application and did live with her the last few years of his life. Her mother died 31 years prior to her application.
  2. Cert. Copy--Child's Birth Cert- This is the birth certificate of her youngest daughter who is still living.
  3. Cert. Copy--Child's Birth Cert- This is the birth certificate of her next to the youngest daughter, June.
  4. Orig. Death Cert. of Sister--This is the death certificate of her oldest sister Ella Ruby Jakes Pirtle.

Tennessee's Delayed Certificates of Birth are two sided forms but this particular one didn't have a notarized statement from a witness or witnesses so the back of the document was blank other than the vital records office's not of address at the top left.

I've pulled the information from two obituaries that were posted in the Nashville newspaper in March 1938.  Robert Jakes Sr. was my double 1st cousin 3 times removed.  He died one month and one day after his wife.  I've added some notes(shown in parenthesis below) using information known to me from my research of our families over the years.  I've also included a chart I made showing the intermarriages which it's essential to know when working with DNA matches from that side of my family.  These are all from my Paternal Grandmother's Dad's lines but there are Jakes who marry into the Frizzell family(other than my two lines of Frizzells) which are from my Paternal Grandmother's Mom's lines.

There are additional Jakes/Harger and Morrow/Sutton siblings
which I have not included here so that I could focus on these couples.

Obituary: Oscar Pete Earp(1888-1967)

I found my paternal great aunt(by marriage) listed in her brother's obituary.  I thought this was such a great example of how I wish every obit was written--full of details.  It also shows how family becomes scattered out across the country.  This is something to think about for those who are using DNA in our family history research.  The following is a listing of the information contained in the obituary.

A Christmas Card from Granny's Paper Collection: Card 2

Another Christmas Card from my Paternal Grandmother's collection.
This one is also from Granny Pearl Jakes Cooke's brother, Will B Jakes and his wife Georgia.

Front of Card --Still has a great deal of Glitter

Inside of Card

There isn't a logo of any sort on the back of the card.  The bottom left corner has P-5 and the bottom right corner 124-2 (beneath that in tinier letters is Litho in U.S.A.)

Do you mail out cards during the holidays?  Did your family mail out cards?   Did any family members save cards they have received?
