Franklin Co. Arkansas: Cook, Lamb, and Hight Folks

In the 1870 US Federal Census,  Joseph Knox Cook is living pretty much surrounded by his Lamb brother in laws(who are also his maternal cousins) in District 10 of Rutherford County Tennessee.  He went out to Franklin Co Arkansas after the 1880 census as did his brother James Polk Cook.  Joe's brother in law, Nelson Hiram Lamb was already out in Franklin Co AR prior to them arriving in Arkansas. In the 1880 US Federal Census Hiram Nelson was living in the Ivy District.  Joe didn't stay in Arkansas very long(see blog post).

William G Hight's probate in Franklin Co. Arkansas was mentioned in several previous posts but today the itemized admin settlement was located.  It provides very good detail of the process and in very good penmanship too.  It begins on page 200 and then skips and continues on page 246.

Williamson Co. TN--Dist 25(1836-1840)--J-L

Over the past few years I've been studying Williamson Co TN Dist. 25 in hopes that knowing how the families were interconnected will help  break thru my Cook brick wall.  Using a spreadsheet, I pulled together my notes and information on this community in order to have a quick reference when those surnames showed up in any other parts of my research. I'm publishing this to my blog in the hopes of finding other researchers interested in the area and time period that the information here might help.  This portion contains families who were living in or taxed in District 25 of Williamson Co TN during the years 1836-1840 whose surnames begin with J-L.  When possible I've noted connections in neighboring districts.  Simply put, there is a lot of overlap of families between Williamson Co TN Dist. 25,  the Versailles and Eagleville area of Rutherford Co TN and Bedford Co TN Dist. 10(Rover). Also please note that anyone listed as NOT enumerated in District 25 should probably read not listed as Head of Household in Williamson Co. TN District 25.  They may be within another household OR they may not be enumerated at all within the district for a number of reasons.

He was also among those who made purchases at the Estate Sale of Joseph S Cook.
He married Martha Pope daughter of Charles Pope & Elizabeth Smith Pope.  Some
researchers have her as a 1st wife but she may have been the only wife.  The 1850 census
for them is a mess. She couldn't have died by 1851 as some claim as the youngest son's
death certificate said his Mom was a Pope. I'm thinking it is more than likely that Martha E's
middle name was Emily. At any rate more research is needed and hopefully this will help.

Bedford Co TN Deed Book Entries--W. C. Cook Family

Last week while I was scanning thru the Bedford Co TN Deed Books at FamilySearch for Jakes/Frizzell deeds I happened upon some from my Cook family.  Posting the locations of the entries here so that they will be easier to find by other researchers who might find them interesting.

Bedford Co TN--Deed Book Entries

  • Deed Book QQ pg 370 W C Cook to John W Maxwell Deed in Trust 100 acres more or less (Dec 1848)
  • Deed Book QQ pg 371 W C Cook to Longshore Lamb and Athey Elmoore Deed in Trust(livestock and household furniture (Dec 1848)
  • Deed Book JJJ pg 276 and 277 D C Jackson and James P Taylor to J K Cook 116 acres 32 square poles more or less (Nov 1872)
  • Deed Book MMM pg 404 J K Cook and wife Emily C Cook to T C Gentry 8 acres more or less (Apr 1876)
  • Deed Book NNN pg 297 J K Cook and wife Emily C Cook to Thos J Lamb 193 acres  more or less  (Nov 1876)
  • Deed Book QQQ pg 19 and 20 J K Cook and wife Emily C Cook to Elijah Morton 45 acres more or less  (Nov 1879)
  • Deed Book QQQ pg 336 and 337 A Tucker to W C Cook (1873-1881)
  • Deed Book QQQ pg 338 and 339 J K Cook and wife Emily C Cook to Cass Cook Bedford Co TN Dist 10 65 acres more or less (Oct 20 1880)
  • Deed Book TTT pg 360 E. A. Morton and wife L.E. Morton to Cass Cook Bedford Co TN Dist 10 45 acres more or less  (Sep 15 1884)
The A.Tucker to W C Cook deed mentioned that it was the same land from the Chancery Court case of Anna Putman and others vs Wm G Hight and others.  It didn't mention the time period but I was lucky enough to find an index within the pages of  digitized microfilm from the Bedford Co TN Chancery Court Minutes which showed the page numbers for 3 entries concerning this case.

Mar. 1871 - Oct. 1872 (2nd Book on the roll of Microfilm)
  • Book pg 201 and 202  Images 440 and 441 of 638
  • Book pg 217 and 218 Images 448 and 449  of 638
  • Book pg 347 and 348  Image 513 of 638
The 3 entries provide a bit of additional information about what happened to the land. After the death of William Putman, the land was sold by William's son, David Vance Putman  I need to transcribe the Minute Book entries.  The writing is a bit hard to read but it does give some more detail about the lands and dates of sale prior to it being purchased by A Tucker..  I have a digital copy of the file from Jabel Putman(Father of Wm Putman & Elizabeth Putman Cook) probate which shows how his land was divided among Jabel's heirs.

You'll need to be registered and logged in to FamilySearch.org but registration is free.  From the above direct links to the Bedford Co TN Deed Book listing you should be able to find the book you want along with a clickable camera icon for the roll on which.  You will likely need to scroll to find it.  Once you find the film that book is on, you can browse to the page you are looking for or in the case of the Chancery Court Records I have provided the image numbers.  When I am looking for records that I might be interested in reading thru I do a search of the catalog by place and note that I want o view those which have images available online.  .

I thought maybe the Simson might be Simeon Putman son of Noah but that seems a bit young to be making purchases so perhaps that is Simpson Putman brother of Noah(see Noah Putman's will linked below).  I believe that the Miles Putman is Jesse Miles Putman son of Hiram Putman.  Miles would be Noah's nephew.  As always I'm open to discussion.

Links to this and other documents from Noah Putman's estate.  These links are from FamilySearch and you will need to create a guest account to view if you do not already have one.  That is free though and no membership is required.

Letter from Fruit Valley, TN on Ebay

While searching Ebay for items of interest, I found a listing for a letter sent from Fruit Valley, Tennessee.  The Fruit Valley Post Office existed from June 1877 to August 1905.  Fruit Valley is of particular interest to me because it is the place of birth of my paternal grandfather, Thomas DeWitt Cooke(1888-1971).  The sender, P.G. Lamb,  likely knew my Grandfather and my Great Grandparents(William Green Cook & Jane Bell King Cook).

The letter was addressed to Globe Printing Company in St. Louis Missouri.  A keyword search at Newspaper.com found that the company had many ads in papers all over the United States.  Some ads were seeking agents to sell publications while others were advertising subscriptions to the Globe Democrat.  The seller didn't mention the contents other than to imply that it was from 1895 so I'm not really sure what the letter contained.  They did mention that the letter was opened.

With community names like Haunt Hollow, Lamb Bottoms and Fruit Valley, what's not to love. I've visited there several times and hope to again.  It really is beautiful country.

While researching the YDNA of the Cook line I have found a line that connects back to Shem Cook(as our YDNA line indicates) that also named a daughter Angeline and their daughter was also born in 1838 Georgia.

I have several of her descendants which have autosomal DNA tested who match me or my siblings.  I also have a number of descendants of those who attended her birthday celebration who are a match with me and/or my siblings.
