Ancestry’s Updated ThruLines: What I Like and What I'd Like To See In Future Updates

The updated layout of Thrulines appeared in my account yesterday.  I think it's a great visualization tool.  It lets you see how many DNA matches have been identified AND fall within the specifications to show up on Thrulines for each branch as you can see in the image below of my Thrulines out to my 2nd Great Grandparents.  

There is nothing that checks to see if the matches are on the correct side though and even if you do evaluate and add or choose not to add there is no option to mark a match as "not valid thru this line."  Case in point, my paternal 2nd cousin once removed (also paternal for him) who is also a maternal 4th cousin once removed (thru his maternal lines) but shares no DNA thru the maternal connection. He shows up in the Thrulines of the Paternal line and the Maternal line. While we are close enough thru the maternal line to have many shared maternal cousins I know he doesn't share DNA with me thru that side because he doesn't share any DNA  with my Mom who has also tested at Ancestry.

Below is a look at my Paternal Grandmother's branch.  The Thrulines doesn't offer the next generations for my 3rd Great Grandmother, Margaret Frizzell. This is due to pedigree collapse as she is a sibling of James M Frizzell my 3rd Great Grandfather(they are the children of Nathan Frizzell and Ruahama Weaver.  It also doesn't show a duplicate of Nathan and Ruahama in card view.  I can't remember if it did prior to the layout change or not.  Regardless they would need to handle pedigree collapse the same over all views of the new display.  I'm guessing it would do the same on a repeat grandfather who had children by multiple wives.  

You can change back to the classic view (at least for now) by selecting Thrulines card view option from the menu on the left. .

• Better Layout of Details in the Evaluating Process

What I’d Like to See Next:

• An "Evaluate & Dismiss" Feature: The ability to mark a proposed connection as invalid and remove it from view.
• Parent Side Filtering: Automatically suppressing match suggestions that contradict verified Parent Side assignments. While this wouldn't eliminate incorrect connections that happen to sit on the right parent's side through a different line, it's a great start and would clear up many common errors.

Mothers of my Direct Line--Out to the 2nd Great Level

In celebration of Mother's Day I've gathered the information I have for the Mothers in my direct line out to my 2nd Great Grandmothers.  I did not include my mother as she is still living. This was a very interesting exercise and it let me see where I have opportunities for more research on these mother lines.  My Dad's mother, Pearl Gray Jakes Cooke was the only one of these women that I met.

Decoration Day where my maternal grandparents and maternal great grandparents are buried is on Mother's Day.  I remember when we would go to place flowers on the graves that the women whose mother was still living wore a red rose and those whose mother had passed on wore a white rose.

Tennessee Delayed Birth Records (1869-1909)

She was 60 years old when she applied for her delayed TN birth certicate. The sources on that certificate are the births of two of  her children, Jakes Family Bible and her sister's death certificate.

Pearl is listed as Mother in the US Social Security Application and Claims Index accounts of her children Magnus, Viola, June and Morris.

US City Directories

She is listed in several City Directories in the 1950s in Nashville.

Vital Records

She lost two infant daughters, Geneva & Elizabeth. Elizabeth's birth announcement was listed in the Huntsville Times(AL).

She was in and out of the hospital several times. My Mom remembers that they pulled fluid off of her frequently.  

She was struck by lightning and lived.

She was also hit by a stray bullet from folks hunting while sitting in her front yard in Van Buren Co TN and survived that but died at the age of 57.

Research Note

Nancy’s residence moved between Rutherford and DeKalb counties during her youth. Notably, her final child, Samuel, was born in March 1899, just one month before her recorded death in April 1899.

When she gave birth to my maternal Grandfather Will in April of 1892 she was in Jordan, Fulton County, Kentucky.  I've always been puzzled by that because the family lived in the Dekalb, White, and Van Buren Co of Tennessee any other time I find them.  My theory is that she was visiting some of her kinfolk there and went into premature labor.  Pa was a really small baby and they did not think he was going to make it but he lived to be 101 years old--dying less than a month from what would have been his 102 birthday.

Mrs. James Acuff, 63, died this morning at 4 o'clock at the residence, 319 Rison avenue, following a long illness. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home, with Homer P. Reeves, minister of the Central Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow in Charity cemetery, with Womack in charge of arrangements. Surviving are the husband; one son, William Acuff; four daughters, Mrs. Minnie Luna, Mrs. Ovena Sharp Sara Acuff, all of Huntsville, and Mrs. Emma Sanders, of Tennessee; and two brothers, Sam and Charles Hale, both of McMinnville, Tenn.

Pallbearers at the funeral will be John McBride, Bob Knowles, H. P. Patton, Lloyd Polk, Raymond Smith and Horace Anderton.

Celebrating 22 years of Blogging!!

I'm celebrating 22 years of blogging here at MarieB's Genealogy Blog this week!!  In honor of that, I'm highlighting #22 on my Ahnentafel chart which is my 2nd Great Grandfather, David W. Frizzell.

David W. Frizzell (1808–1870) was a long-time resident of Bedford County, Tennessee living the majority of his life in the Bell Buckle Tennessee area according to census and tax records. He was the son of James M Frizzell and his wife Mary Kennedy. David married Rebecca Manley on November 15th of 1834. Evidence supporting Rebecca's maiden name as Manley can be found in the Frizzell Bible Records and by examining the mother's name on the death certificates of 4 of  David and Rebecca's children(John, Henry, Abbie and Annie.) When their son John B Frizzell's widow passed in 1938, the court records listed all of John B's siblings(Children of David and Rebecca) who had surviving heirs.  You can read more about that at my blog post HERE.

At least 3 of David's sons fought in the Civil War.  Lee Andrew Perkins Frizzell, James Reuben Frizzell, and David Crockett Frizzell--all in 44th Tennessee Infantry Regiment(Confederate).  Lee Andrew lost one of his legs below his knee because of an injury and David Crockett Frizzell died April 6 1862 at Shiloh. Following the death of wife Rebecca, in 1862, David remarried on January 22, 1863, to Sallie McKee. 

He was enumerated in the 1870 US Federal Census of Bedford Co TN but died on the 27th of December 1870 according to the Frizzell Bible Records.

He has many descendants who live in Tennessee and beyond, some of which are among the matches on my DNA match lists at AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FTDNA and 23&me. I need to do more research into his early land records.  I've found some land records between his father and his father in law but need to do further research on both the Frizzell and Manley lines.

Heirs of John Frizzell listed in Rutherford Co TN Minutes(1939)

Case: A. D. Frizzell et al. vs. No. 668 Allene Ferrell et al.

This case centers on a 90-acre tract of land originally owned by John (J. B.) Frizzell (recorded in Deed Book 74, page 428). John was the son of David Frizzell and Rebecca Manley Frizzell.  Following John’s death in October 1929, his widow, Susan Frizzell, occupied the property until her own passing in 1939. Because the couple had no children, the estate was distributed to the heirs of John’s siblings. All of his siblings were deceased by the time of this case, so it was necessary to trace the lineage down an addition generation or two.  It is important to remember that the Order of Reference only lists those siblings who produced heirs.  It does not mention Margaret Catherine Frizzell who died young nor  James Reuben Frizzell who is deceased and had no issue. Given the amount of heirs(60), it was determined that it would be best to sell the 90 acre tract.

1. Lee Andrew Frizzell 5 living children (1/42 share each) and 2 grandchildren (1/84 share each).
2. Thea Frizzell 8 living children (1/63 share each) and 5 grandchildren via Mary Frizzell Reynolds (1/315 share each).
3. Sissie Taylor 1 living son, Zack (1/21 share), 1 grandson via Beckie (1/21 share), and 2 grandchildren via Norah (1/42 share each).
4. Abbie Frizzell 1 living son, A. D. Frizzell, who receives a full 1/7 interest.
5. Annie Jakes 6 living children and 1 grandchild (Hazel Jakes), each receiving a 1/49 share.
6. Mealie Fults 3 living children, each receiving a 1/21 share.
7. Henry Frizzell 11 living children (1/98 share each) and various grandchildren via deceased children Susan, Dona, and Dave (shares ranging down to 1/490).

I didn't mention the names of all the heirs in this article but a complete list can be seen by visiting the URL listed in the source below.

Comparing these minutes against my own research proved highly productive, though it did reveal a discrepancy: one of the grandchildren’s surnames is recorded incorrectly. Based on the context, I suspect this error occurred when the case was being transcribed into the official minutes book.

Deed: Frizzell to Kennedy Recorded in Butler Co KY(1855)

I located a deed of James M Frizzell and his wife Mary using FamilySearch's full text search.  James and Mary are my 3rd Great Grandparents thru my paternal grandmother, Pearl Gray Jakes Cooke's ancestry.

Abstract Summary

• Date of deed: 21 May 1855

• Grantors: James M. Frizzell and his wife Mary Frizzell, formerly Mary Kennedy, of Calloway County, Kentucky.

• Grantee: Joseph H. Kennedy of Wilson County, Tennessee.

• Consideration: $50.

• Land location: Butler County, Kentucky (formerly Logan County), on the east side of Muddy River, a place called “the round about.”

• Acreage: 200 acres (per 1797 survey).

• Original title: Survey dated 8 July 1797; Certificate No. 321; patent from the Commonwealth of Kentucky to Anne Kennedy dated 15 May 1798.

• Interest conveyed: One undivided fourth part of the 200-acre tract. The patent to Anne Kennedy (1798) predates this deed by 57 years.

  The land was surveyed in 1797 and patented to Anne Kennedy in 1798.

• The tract remained undivided among heirs.
  Mary owned an undivided one-fourth interest, meaning the 200 acres had not been partitioned. She owned a one-quarter share in the whole tract rather than a physically separated 50 acres. This makes me think that Joseph H Kennedy could be a nephew who is buying out the other heirs. 

• There were at least four heirs.
  Since Mary’s share is described as one undivided fourth, that implies the land was divided by inheritance interest into four equal shares.

• Joseph H. Kennedy acquired Mary’s inherited share.
  He purchased her entire undivided one-fourth interest for $50.

• James M. Frizzell’s role.
  As Mary’s husband, he joined in the conveyance, which was legally required. Mary was separately examined to confirm she acted voluntarily and relinquished dower.

• Geographic note.
  The deed was executed in Calloway County, Kentucky, but recorded in Butler County, where the land lay. The grantee resided in Wilson County, Tennessee.

Further research is needed in the KY land records.  Kentucky Genealogical Society has a great article called  "Beginner’s Guide to Researching Kentucky Land Grants" that will be very helpful in understanding where to look for records. 

I also need to research Joseph H Kennedy to see how he connects to Mary. It would seem given his interest in the land, that he must be a family member, but that is not proved at this point.  This is the first document I have found that mentions Mary's mother, Ann.  I believe her father is Henry Hugh Frizzell, but have not yet located a marriage for them.

My 4th Great Grandfather Nathan Frizzell served in the Revolutionary War out of South Carolina.  I descend from him thru two lines-- one thru his daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Frizzell Manley and the other thru his son, James Marion Frizzell.  Below is just a small portion of the information contained in his Revolutionary War Pension application.  In addition to the usual service details it also gives a pretty good detail of the families residences. Some of them ended up in Calloway Co. Kentucky.

He entered the Service of United State as a volunteer under Captain William Deason in what is now called Chesterfield District in the state of South Carolina, some time in the month of October 1780 and was attached to a Regiment commanded by Colonel John Marshall of General Sumpter's Brigade. He states they were not marched from that county or district any distance but was engaged in reconnoitering and acted as Rangers and watching the movements of the Tories until the following may when he states Col. Marshall's Regiment was attached to General Green's Army. He states he was marched with General Green's Army from Camden S Carolina to the high hills of Santa by way of a little town called  Statesville from that and to the Eutaw Springs, where he states he was in an engagement against the British who were under the commander of Lord Roddick He states that Col William Washington was taken prisoner at that Engagement by the British, he states that he company he belonged to was permitted to return home after the battle of Eutaw Springs after serving about eight months. he states that the was attached to General Sumpter's Brigade again and continued with him until Cornwallis was taken, he states he was engaged in several small skirmishes with the Tories one at Rugeley's Mill an Granny's Quarter Creek one other at Rocky Mount an Catawba River and one other skirmish at Black Creek with the Tories in Chesterfield district South Carolina. And one small engagement, which should have been mentioned previously in this declaration at the High Hill two miles from Camden about the 1st of May 1781. Making in all a term of service of twelve months or there about. H e further states that he has no documentary evidence whatever and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can precure who can testify as to his service and hereby relinquishes all claims to a pension or annuity whatever except the present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any Agency in the United States.

I do not recollect the names of any regular officer except Col Wm Washington tho I saw Col Lee and Col Washington's troops frequently

I did receive a discharge in writing signed by Col John Marshall but I have lost or mislaid it many years ago & cannot produce it at this time.

Deeds of Heirs of David Frizzell--Bedford Co. TN

Those researching David W Frizzell and wife, Rebecca Manley will be interested in the following deeds.  David and Rebecca had at least 11 children. Two of them predeceased David as did Rebecca.  He is sometimes confused with another David Frizzell who also lived in Bedford Co TN and died leaving a will naming his wife Nancy.   After Rebecca's death, David did remarry to Sallie McKee(she is the Sallie enumerated with him in 1870) however all of his known children are thru his 1st wife, Rebecca.  They lived in District 4 of Bedford County Tennessee.  I'll post any others I find and link the posts. David and Rebecca are my 2nd Great Grandparents(the maternal grandparents of my paternal grandmother)

Telitha Ann Frizzell Jakes(28 Mar 1858- 18 May 1920)--52 Ancestors

My great grandmother, Telitha Ann Frizzell Jakes was the daughter of David Frizzell and Rebecca "Beckie" Manley Frizzell. My grandmother, Pearl Jakes Cooke, used to tell us about her Mother being the youngest child and how when her parents were expecting her they were getting all sorts of suggestions for names. The story(and I don't know how true it was) went on to say that there were so many suggestions they had a long name that they almost named her to include everyone but instead decided on Telitha Ann Frizzell. She went by the name Annie. A short and simple name, especially compared to "Edy Addy Annabelle Narcissa Fannie Yell" Frizzell. Annie's mother died when she was around the age of 4. Her father remarried and passed on about 8 years later. Annie married my great grandfather, James Jakes in Rutherford County Tennessee September 1st of 1880. I've not found Annie in the 1880 census but I did find James Jakes boarding near Annie's widowed step-mother.

Annie and James had 5 daughters and 3 sons which they raised during the earlier years in Bell Buckle, Tennessee. I stopped there once on my way back home to Alabama. It was beautiful and made me feel close to that side of the family. I've always been curious about what she looked like. I've seen photos of all my other great grandparents that I never got to meet but not of Annie. One of Annie's daughters, Lula Jakes Gibson, named her only daughter after her Mom, naming her Telitha Aline Gibson.

 When her brother James Reubin Frizzell passed, he left her some property which she and her husband James sold a few years later to Abe Eaton. I found the deed for it in the Bedford Co TN records. She died May 18th of 1920 from complications of pneumonia. For whatever reason, her tombstone in the Willow Mount Cemetery has the year of death as 1919 but I am fairly certain that her death certificate which I have a copy of is more likely to be correct.

Obituaries: Andrew Lee Gibson & Fannie Cora Jakes Gibson

I've been going thru folders and binders looking over copies of things I ordered when I first started researching my family history in 1990.  Around that time I sent a letter to the Shelbyville Time-Gazette or the library in Shelbyville(I can't remember which one and don't still have the envelope) and got a copy of the obituaries of my Paternal Grandmother's sister Cora Jakes Gibson and her husband, Andrew Lee Gibson.  The image I have included with this blog post is a side by side screenshot of the two copies of the obituaries.  The information within the two obituaries is included below.  

Andrew Lee Gibson Dies in Hamilton Ohio

Andrew Lee Gibson, 77, died this morning in Hamilton, Ohio following a long illness.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 4 pm from the chapel of he Gowen funeral Home. The Rev. Homer A Cate will officiate and burial will follow in Willow Mount Cemetery.

Mr. Gibson was a native of Bedford County and had lived in Shelbyville until he moved to Hamilton a year and a half ago.


He is survived by this wife, Mrs. Cora Jakes Gibson of Hamilton; 

Two Sons Lytle and Preston Gibson of Shelbyville
Four Daughter Mrs. Irene Wagster and Eunice Osteen of Hamilton
Mrs. Verna Waster and Mrs. Leona Uselton of Shelbyville
Four Brothers, Dee Gibson of Bell Buckle John Gibson of Normandy, Estell and Joe Gibson of Beech Grove and by 9 grand children and four great grandchildren.
The body was to arrived late today or tonight at the Gowen Funeral home.

Mrs. Gibson, 81, Dies. Services to Be On Thursday

Mrs. Fannie Cora Gibson, 81, died Monday night at her home on Hay Rd. after a long illness.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Gowen-Smith Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Mount Cemetery.

A native of Rutherford County, Mrs. Gibson was the daughter o he late James Jakes and Thelitha Ann Frizzell Jakes. Her husband Andrew Lee Gibson died in 1951. She was a member of the Hoover's Gap Baptist Church.

Surviving are 

Four Daughters, Mrs. Irene Wagster and Mrs. Eunice Osteen, both of Hamilton, Ohio
Mrs. Verna Wagster of Shelbyville(TN) and Mrs. Leone Whiteside of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Two Sons Lytle Gibson of the Flat Creek Community and Preston Gibson with whom she resided.
Two Sisters Mrs. Pearl Cooke and Mrs. Lula Gibson both of Nashville.
Two Brothers, Will Jakes and Euless Jakes, both of Old Hickory; 10 Grandchildren 16 Great Grandchildren and one Great Great grandchild.

Pearl Gray Jakes Cooke--TN Delayed Certificate of Birth

 My paternal grandmother was born in 1891 in Bell Buckle, Bedford County, Tennessee, USA.  The state of Tennessee did not began keeping birth records statewide until 1908.  It was 1951 before my grandmother applied for her delayed certificate which means she was 60 years old at the time of her application. 

It's interesting to see what documents are used for evidence.  The image below shows what my grandmother used.  I've marked thru the certificate number and the date for item 2 because it is that of my Aunt Bobbie who is still living.  I left the date on the column to the far right which is the date the original document was made which can vary a good bit from the date of birth.  

1. Original Family Bible--I have no clue where this Bible is but think it would most likely be that of James Jakes, Pearl's father.  He died 10 yrs prior to her application and did live with her the last few years of his life. Her mother died 31 years prior to her application.
2. Cert. Copy--Child's Birth Cert- This is the birth certificate of her youngest daughter who is still living.
3. Cert. Copy--Child's Birth Cert- This is the birth certificate of her next to the youngest daughter, June.
4. Orig. Death Cert. of Sister--This is the death certificate of her oldest sister Ella Ruby Jakes Pirtle.  

Tennessee's Delayed Certificates of Birth are two sided forms but this particular one didn't have a notarized statement from a witness or witnesses so the back of the document was blank other than the vital records office's not of address at the top left.

Charles Fuller Frizzell Jr(1896-1978).--My 4C2R

Charles Fuller Frizzell Jr. was the son of Charles Fuller Frizzell Sr. from my previous blog post and the grandson of the John Frizzell, Tennessee Supreme Court judge who is also mentioned in a previous blog post. Charles Jr. was born in Nashville and spent his earlier years there before the family moved to Atlanta and later New York.

In 1917 Charles was part of the 38th infantry and was promoted to 1st Lt. while in France. He received a distinguished service cross for his services in WWI in which he was several wounded, captured, and detained in a German prison camp. According to his military service card in Ancestry's New York Abstracts of WWI Military Service, 1917-1919, he was involved in the following engagements: Aisne, Champagne-Marne and Aisne-Marne. In 1919, he retired due to injuries he sustained while in service and returned to work as assistant agency superintendent of Royal Indemnity Company.

An article from 1945 notes that he was commanding officer of the Philadelphia Women's Army Corps Recruiting District until it was absorbed by the US Army Recruiting Service(1945) at which time he was appointed commanding officer over the US Army Recruiting Service of Eastern Pennsylvania

I was able to find an address for Charles Jr. for May 1950 in Ancestry's Pennsylvania, Veteran Compensation Application Files, WWII, 1950-1966. He filed this because he had went back into the Army from June 1942 to March 1946 during which time he worked in recruiting.  I took that address and Googled it and from there found it on Zillow(a real estate website) which included pictures of the home. It should be the same home, as the description given said that the home was built in 1930. Another address from the September 8th, 1918 edition of the New York Times Union Newspaper(at Newspaper.com) gave an address along with his name among those on the list of Prisoners of War. There is actually a history of that building on a website about New York Architecture. It's really interesting because the building was at one time, Headquarters for The Royal Insurance Company where Charles Sr. was Vice President at the time.

Charles F. Frizzell Jr. and his wife Phyllis Phillips Frizzell had 3 daughters--Phyllis, Rosemary, and Edith Lee.  Charles passed in 1978 and is buried in the Trinity Church Cemetery in Manhattan, New York along with family, and many other notable historical figures.
