Comparison of 4C Descendants of Jabel Putman

 


Last month I posted a chart which compared the amount of shared DNA between 3 of my siblings and myself to a set of 4 siblings which are 4th cousins to us.  They were all descendants of William Putman, son of Jabel Putman. My siblings and I descend thru Jabel's daughter Elizabeth Putman Cook.  I thought it might also be interesting to see a chart of the other 4th cousins who also descend thru Jabel Putman compared to my siblings and myself.  I didn't include one of my brothers in this comparison because he isn't tested at all the sites which I used to collect the matches. There is representation from all but 2 of Jabel's children who had children.  I wasn't able to include descendants of their branches because I couldn't find tested descendants thru them who were 4th Cousins to us.  It seems we have an abundance of 4C1R from Jabel.  As I did in my previous chart I also included a 3C1R's amount(shown in green) so there would be a point of reference for a generation closer to the Most Recent Common Ancestor(MRCA).

Nothing really conclusive to tell if Wm Putman's descendants are Double 4C with us.  It's believed that Wm Putman's wife was the sister of Elizabeth Putman Cook's husband, Wm C Cook but we have no definite proof as we have not located Wm & Anna's marriage nor do we have definite proof of the parents of Wm C Cook.

Shared DNA Match Amounts between 2 Sibling Sets


The above chart is a visual representation of the Shared DNA between 2 sets of siblings that are known 4th cousins.  It is also believed that they may be Double 4th cousins but not yet proven.  They are kin to me and my siblings thru our Dad's side of the family.  I've also included my paternal aunt in the chart to show the DNA which they share with her.  While I'm not able to compare what my aunt shares with them to what Dad shared with them, I can see that my aunt shares almost double what any one my siblings or I share with JB.  I should also note that Bro-2 shares no DNA with JP or with JB.  That is not unusual once you get beyond the 2nd Cousin once removed level.

Jonny Perl's DNA Painter Website is very helpful for comparing match amounts thru the shared cM project and a number of other tools available there.  I am a subscriber, however the basic version of DNA Painter is free. Shared DNA Amounts --Example of variation

Looking at shared amounts of DNA between Mom's Hale/Hitchcock 2nd Cousin.

That cousin is a 2nd Cousin once removed to me and my siblings.  My brother and sister get a substantial amount of the DNA she shares with this cousin.  However, I get a much smaller amount and that amount is low enough that Ancestry applies Timber and it shaves an additional 19cM.

I also see this in my Cook(e)/Putman line where my brother shares a much smaller amount with several of our 2C1R than my sister and I share with them..

Shared segments: How my 3 siblings compare to me

In addition to my own test, I now have 3 of my siblings who have taken autosomal DNA tests.   I've been concentrating on our paternal line because it contains a research roadblock beyond the 2nd great Grandfather of our Cook(e) line.  I was curious what Paternal DNA I had gotten from Dad that none of my other siblings had.  A little background---We are full siblings.  Dad passed before we began DNA testing.  Our Mom has tested.  I've generated phased kits for myself and my 3 siblings at GEDmatch.

I compared each of my 3 sibling's Paternal Phased kits to my Paternal Phased kit and I painted those segments on my profile at DNApainter.  You can click on this to enlarge.  I didn't include Chr 23(X) in the comparison.  As you can see in the image below there are portions on pretty much each of the chromosomes where none of the 3 match with me. (Note:  You should exclude the first portions of Chr 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22 which aren't included in testing.)




Looking at these paternal segments of each of the siblings compared to me, there is a range of about 200 cM.  My sister and I seem to have gotten a variety of different segments from our Dad. See the comparison of the paternal matching segments for she and I in the image below.

I used the same process explained above to compare the maternal segments.


With very few exceptions it looks like my siblings and I have received more of the same maternal segments.  That would make me think that more of the DNA which Mom had might have been lost.  Thankfully she tested so I have her test for comparison to others.




My sister also shares the least amount in common segments maternally as well.  Still a good bit more In-Common-With segments on the maternal lines than paternal.  My recommendation remains the same.  Test as many siblings as possible.

AncestryDNA results--a 3 generation comparison of DNA Match



I have an example of  a DNA match across 3 generations and also a very good illustration of why the ability to compare in a chromosome browser is the only way to know with more certainty how we match someone.  Below you see the match, Joy compared to my Mom,Beatrice.  They share 10.1 cM across 1 DNA segment



Next let's look at my sister, Rebecca compared to Joy.(You can only do the comparison with tests for which you have admin or editor rights.)  Looks like she didn't get that segment from Mom.


Compared with Joy she and I share 25.3 cMs across 2 segments.  Wait--Mom only had 10.1 cM.  Where did I pick up the other 15.2 cMs?  Was it a no-call on Mom's test and actually from her side?  Did I get it from my Dad?  Dad passed before he could test but I have a phased kit of the DNA which I got from him.  I could compare my paternal phased DNA  if Joy were at GEDmatch.   Hopefully she will upload her results there.




Now let's take a look at my daughter, Brittany compared to Joy. Looks like she got both segments and would have the potential for passing these segments on to any children she may have.



Thoughts:  We can't know for sure that the 15.2 cM segment that I have and that I passed on is from my Dad without comparison of the tests results in a Chromosome Browser. Then we can draw some conclusions.  Think about it though--Rebecca's two children will not have these segments because she did not have them to pass on to them.  That is how sometimes we have different matches than our siblings  DNA Randomness. It's no wonder that on average we only match about half of our 4th cousins.

And AncestryDNA's estimated Amount of Shared DNA is.....

In last Wednesday's blog post I asked if anyone wanted to take a guess at how many shared cMs a cousin match at AncestryDNA was estimated by Ancestry to have.  The match is kin to me 5 different ways. On reevaluating I found yet another shared Double line.  The only person who posted a guess via the comments was Randy Seaver,  so regardless,  he is the closest.  :-)  Perhaps the question was intimidating--DNA research can be like that sometimes.  Randomness.  It doesn't always follow logic or mathematical principles inheritance-wise.

The match shared the following connections with me

5C1R(2x)------Nathan Frizzell & Margaret Deason(my 4Gr his 5Gr) (*)
4C---------------James Morrow & Margaret Sutton(both 3rd Grs)
4C---------------James Jakes & Nancy Harger(both 3rd Grs)

Additional discoveries of

I used the BLUE for the relationships that were thru my PGM's Dad and the PINK
for the ones that were thru my PGM's Mom.




Typically half of your 4th cousins won't even share DNA with you.
If I had guessed I would have taken the average for all the relationship amounts

4C=13.28  (times 2)
4C1R=6.64
5C1R=1.66 (times 2)
6C= .83
6C1R= .42
Estimated Total that way would have been 37.77 cMs
Which would put me in really close to Randy's guess.  In reality I share 114 cMs across 9 segments as shown below.  That is a typical amount for 2nd Cousins once removed.


I should also note that the 114 cMs made it thru the Ancestry "cut" so it doesn't include anything that is in what they consider to be a "pile-up" region.  Ancestry matches will not include X Segments so there may still be more in common along the X where it is in the x inheritance path.  In typically fashion my sister has done it again and matched them more. The match shares 132 cMs with her across 7 segments.




I really need to see this match at GEDmatch. I think this is a great exercise in how large segments are passed.  In my daughter's matches there are many of the Wildes/Wilkinson descendants who share a large segment of 50 cMs on one chromosome.  Randomness for sure!
