Comparing Paternal Aunt to her Nieces & Great Niece in Chromosome Browser

I think this is a good illustration of the randomness of DNA.   I'm comparing Me, my sister, and my daughter to my paternal aunt(my daughter's maternal great aunt.)  Click on the image to enlarge.

The above segment matches are of segments matches which are  5cM or highter  on the FTDNA chromosome browser.  I've uploaded to GEDmatch and can do One To One comparisons.  I'll be able to run a list of matches and other comparison reports once it batch processes.

At GEDmatch with a threshold of 7 cMs or greater:
I match my Aunt at 1610 cMs over 39 segments(largest segment of 102cMs)
Sis matches Aunt at 1548 cMs over 45 segments(largest segment of 158 cMs)
My daughter matches her Great Aunt at 785 cM over 25 segments the largest is 72 cMs

Another strategy for finding cousins who have atDNA tested at Ancestry.

For those that have taken the atDNA test at Ancestry.com and not gotten any Circles or maybe you have Circles but none for the ancestor you are wanting to research.  When you are viewing documents that are attached to your ancestor in others trees look at the right hand column when viewing the document or picture.  You will see the button that tells you who the doc or pic is linked to.  Other ancestors or persons in or mentioned in the picture may be linked.  Below that is a Saved By listing for other people who have saved that picture or document which should mean they are interested or related to the family in some way.

Click on any of the Users.  This should take you to their profile page.  From there you should be able to toggle thru any kits you admin and check against the profile.   You do this by clicking on the Hyperlinked word "your".   See the arrow pointing to it in the  image below(Edited for privacy).  This doesn't always work and I think it is due to settings for the other profile if they privacy settings pretty tight.

If any of the kits you admin match the main profile or any of the kit's for which that profile is the admin, those kits will show below the Main profile panel.  It is important to note that Absence of a match doesn't mean that they tested and do not match it.  It means there is no DNA available for that profile that matches yours. They may have tested and not match...or they may not have a test at all.  When you do find a match though you can then click on it to go the Match page and look at cM amounts,  projected relationship, tree, etc.

Chromosome Mysteries and hopes for some answers....A learning process for sure.

After having gotten my DNA results almost a month ago I have been working on finding matches to help solve a few of the research issues I have had on several of my family lines.  While waiting for responses from some of those I contacted I started looking more in depth at names and groupings of people that match along each chromosome.  I have been comparing matches along the X chromosome(Chromo 23) and noticed that I have over 6 matches who have the Taylor surname listed in their user name.  Given the X inheritance pattern (paternal grandmother and maternal grandparents) it intrigues me even further because you would think that there would be a wide assortment of surnames.  I don't have a Taylor surname in my direct line that I know of though I have always suspected that my GGG Grandfather, William Taylor Hale(Warren & Van Buren Co. TN), possibly had the middle name because it was the maiden name of either his Mother or one of his Grandmothers.  Since I have not gotten his line back with proof any further than him I do not know if this is so.  Another thought as I was looking through the family tree shares of people who match my DNA --I have noticed that there are several who have the surnames Archer, Collins Martin & Scott in their trees. I checked over my new matches at AncestryDNA and found a tester's name that I recognized.  She is a 4th cousin through my Daniel Pittman & Comfort Hatfield line.  I have had known matches of Daniel & Comfort's son David & his wife Mary Adcock but to get the DNA connection back even further is exciting.  I recommended that she put her DNA data at GEDmatch so that we could compare chromosome segment matches.  Sure hope she does as it would really help to sort those lines out.  Still waiting on Mom's DNA to show up as processing.  I would expect to have the results by the end of this month which will help me to determine what matches are on her side and which were from Dad..
