Newspaper notes mention the Lytle family--NC & TN

While looking at information about the Lytle family, I found mention of a James Cook-- an associate of Obediah Pinson.  The Lytle family and Obediah Pinson have connections to Guilford and Orange Counties of North Carolina.  I need to determine which  James Cook this might be.

-----

Application
will be made to the commissioner of West Tennessee, on the 15th day of June next, for a certificate on Grant No. 1675, issued by the state of North Carolina, to Archibald Lytle, for 640 acres, dated the 20th day of May 1793.

I claim an undivided moiety thereof by a deed from said Lytle to James Cook and myself.

This application will be made on the ground the land called for in said grant cannot be identified

Obediah Pinson.

Article from in the Rutherford Courier  about Col. Wm. Lytle mentions his brother, Archibald Lytle.

Cooks Mentioned in Franklin Co. NC Court Minutes(March 1811)

Found mention of William Cook and Pope Cook in the Franklin County, North Carolina Court Minutes of March 1811.

Minutes of March Court 1811, p 58
Ordered that Atha Thomas be appointed overseer
of the road from Billy's Creek to Chavis Road, and
that he keep the same in repair with the hands
of William and Pope Cook, William and Willie
Winston, James York, William, and Jesse Winston and
his own.

Is this William Pope Cook and his presumed father William Cook of Shem Cooke's line?  I don't know, but it is exciting to see these names together.

North Carolina Baptist Historical Collection

After Elvira's sister, Abigail Allen made the statement about the length of the prayer given by the minister at Elvira and William's marriage ceremony(1786) I had to go looking to see what I could find about him.  His name was Jacob Crocker and as she mentioned he was a Baptist preacher.  Wake Forrest has a great NC Baptist Historical Collection  So far I've searched the NC Baptist Biographical Files Collection.  In it I found not only Jacob Crocker, but some family information within his file which showed interaction with the Winston family(they are connected to the Shem Cooke descendants).  There was also a card for Roland Cooke within that collection with a notation of Records and an additional item to check.

In addition to the previously mentioned NC Baptist Biographical Files Collection you can also find:

  • Baptist Newspapers
  • Baptist State Convention of NC Digital Collection
  • Books & Pamphlets
  • NC Baptist Church Records & Association Files
  • Religion in NC Project
If your family was of the Baptist faith in the area around the Carolinas it wouldn't hurt to check out this collection.  There is a good bit available online. Visit this page to check out the library catalog, finding aids and more.

Article about Shem Cooke in Historic Maury(TN) journal

Over the holidays a Google search on Shem Cooke pointed to an Amazon listing. The publication though no longer available at Amazon, should be available at the Family History Library in SLC and likely at the Maury Co TN Library.  The journal in question is Historic Maury- (Volume 32, Number 1, March 1996)  – January 1, 1996. The article I'm interested in is "Shem Cooke & His Family in Granville & Franklin Counties, North Carolina."

I want to see who wrote the article and which Cook(e)s are part of the Shem Cooke line because Shem Cooke's Y DNA line is a match with our YDNA line(well my brother's test) at a Genetic Distance of 1. Our Cook(e) line was in Bedford Co TN but can be found in records for the surrounding counties of Rutherford and Williamson. I've not yet found the connecting generations whether it's back to Shem or whether we connect prior to Shem.

Off to try and locate a copy of that article.  Hope to post an update when I can get a copy.

State of North Carolina listed on 1836 tax list in Wilson Co. Tennessee

In the 1836 Early TN Tax List Records for Wilson Co TN's Dist 17, it appears that the State of North Carolina owns 317 acres valued at $1000 for which they paid $70 tax.  I did not find a 1837 tax list but checked the 1838 tax list for Dist 17 and didn't see the State of North Carolina listed as owing tax.

Benjamin Woodward---Money Maker--Counterfeiter

While researching the Cook line I came across the story of Benjamin Woodward a money maker-- but not the legal way.  He was a counterfeiter.  I developed a timeline of events using the articles that I was able to find at the Newspaper.com site.   The Cookes named in the first incident are likely cousins of mine.   Our Y DNA links to Shem Cooke(who married Ann Rucker) out of Virginia and Granville Co. North Carolina.  I can't positively identify them as there are many who carry the same name in the Cooke family and who live in the same area but given the Rucker name is also mentioned I'd consider it highly likely that there is a connection. Keep in mind while you read this that the punishment for counterfeiting was death.  This could be a movie plot.

Timeline
1773 25 Feb (Thur) --- The Virginia Gazette(Williamsburg, VA) Page 3
Capt. John Lightfoot returns from a trip to Pittsylvania on order of Gov. to apprehend and bring Benjamin Cooke, Joseph Cooke, James Cooke, Benjamin Woodward and Peter Medley in for questioning.  John Short, a former under Sheriff had reason to believe they were involved in counterfeiting and passing counterfeit notes.  At the time they were taken in, they had been at their shop where tools used in the producing counterfeit notes and coins were found.  All subjects with the exception of James Cooke(he did not appear to have done anything criminal) were taken on to jail and will go to York for further examination next Tuesday.  Several others also committed to jail on suspicion of being involved with the counterfeiting.  Gideon Rucker and Shem Cooke of Pittsylvania and John Hightower and William Hightower of Lunenburg have fled and the Governor is offering a reward.

1773 22 Apr (Thu)---The Virginia Gazette  (Williamsburg, Virginia) Page 3
Benjamin Cook, Benjamin Woodward, Joseph Cook, and Peter Medley, from Pittsylvania, for counterfeiting Gold and Silver Coins, and passing Counterfeit Treasury Notes:  Acquitted.  "The Testimony of John Short, the principal evidence against the prisoners, was invalidated by sundry evidences in their behalf, who proved him a most atrocious Villain;  and their counsel even made a motion in court to have him indicted for perjury.   He is since gone off; and has left behind him in this city, a wife and six helpless children in most pitiful circumstances."

Terrance Thynne is brought in on charges of passing counterfeit bills.  He claims no knowledge that the bills not being authentic.  He obtained them from Benjamin Woodward.  Thynne's witness is also found to have been guilty of passing counterfeit.  James Arthur is also brought in and more information on Benjamin Woodward's operation is obtained.

1792 25 Jul (Wed)---The Pennsylvania Gazette(Philadelphia, PA) pg 3

Statement from Baltimore on July 18th. Beware of counterfeits of Virginia Military Certificates. believed to be passed by the brother of Benjamin Woodward of Dinwiddie Co. near Petersburgh, Virginia. While it doesn't give the first name of Woodward's brother it is likely the Jesse Woodward mentioned in the previous article. Description about 5' 7" or 8" well set, about 40 years old with short black hair, little grey ruddy complexion, dark eyes, with a small piece of his nose bit off(near upper part of right nostril) Last seen wearing black hat and cloth coat, nankeen waistcoat and breeches.

The following article from The Progress-Index(Petersburg, VA) tells a little more about Benjamin Woodward. The Dinwiddie Counterfeiter article by Tamara Eastman

Google Books also have a few that mention counterfeiter, Benjamin Woodward. I'm sure there was a lot more to the story.

1850 Bedford Co TN, USA -- Industrial and Manufacturers Census Schedules--Nicholas Anthony

Today I read some of the entries from the Industrial & Manufacturers Census Schedule for 1850 Bedford County Tennessee. The first listing is for a Nicholas Anthony--No known ties to my family but to me it is very interesting info that you can find in the non-population schedule that will lead you to other information.  His listing starts:  Nicholas Anthony  Mill(Flour)  Water powered with 1 saw.   As a researcher it makes me wonder who he interacted with on a daily weekly or monthly basis.   The entry also mentions what looks to be production of lumber or planks.  There is a Nicholas Anthony in the 1830 & 1840 Census of Bedford Co Tennessee.  It appears that the same Nicholas Anthony that is listed in 1830 and 1840 Census is also the one listed in 1850.  In 1850 he is 70 years old born in North Carolina with a female in the household age 67 and named Sarah whose place of birth is also listed as North Carolina.  Seventy seems kind of old to be running a mill but perhaps he is the owner and his son or sons run it for him. There is a North Carolina marriage for a Nicholas Anthony and an Elizabeth Nicholson with Jacob Anthony as bondsman in Guilford Co. NC on Oct 21, 1800.  I wonder if this is the same couple or if Sarah is a second wife. 1840 Census has Anthony families with Head of Households named Jacob, Henry, William and Adam living nearby. A Nicholas Anthony is also listed in the 1850 Agricultural Non-Population Census for District 25 of Bedford Co TN.   Also listed are Shofner, Low, Kimbro, Harrison and Landris families which are some of the same name who have been listed around him in previous census entries.  I checked the Land Deed Genealogy of Bedford Co TN 1807-1852 by Helen C Marsh and Timothy R. Marsh and there are two listings for Nicholas Anthony on page 78.  These entries are extracted information in the original Deed Book "M" pg. 105 and 107.  The entries TN Grants No. 9587 and No 9588 both 15 acres each and dated Feb. 23 1813.  Granted to Nicholas who is listed as an assignee of Benjamin McCullock.  The land is on the waters of the Thompson River and both areas are noted as bordering the property of Peter Shofner.  Are there any of your family listed in the Industrial & Manufacturers Census Schedule?
Below is the link to a blank form where you can see the column headings.  A lot easier to read the headings from the form than the ones on the images as they seem to be the worst part of the digitized images.

Revisiting the New River Notes website

I remember looking over the New River Notes website in the late 90s when Jeff Weaver created it. It was great then but it is even better now.  I have 17 more years experience researching and a better idea of where my ancestors lived.   There has also been a great deal added to the website over those years.  I need to take a day and read through it.  If you have ancestors in the counties it covers or in the surrounding counties it really is worth your time to check it out.

Upper New River Valley covers the following counties

  • North Carolina
    • Alleghany
    • Ashe
    • Surry
    • Watauga
    • Wilkes
    • Yadkin

Read over some of the Lincoln Co. North Carolina probate records and found the will of John Cathey which was proved at the March 1837 Session of the Lincoln Co Court.  John listed all his children but apparently did not approve one of his daughter's choice of a husband.

All records I could find showed the marriage as the same day as the bond.  While I am not sure that is accurate John Cathey's will proves that they must have married at least by the time of his writing the will and he was apparently not very fond of Livingston.  Livingston is thought to be the son of Dr. George Mauney Sr. even though he is not mentioned in George's will of 1840.  A check of the files at Ancestry and Rootsweb have Livingston's date of death as 16th November 1849 though I never found a source for that.  There are a lot of unanswered questions.  What caused John Cathey to not like Livingston?   What was the cause of death for Livingston?  Forties is fairly young to die..even back then.  What became of Jane "Jenny" Cathey Mauney?  Did she also die around that time?  Did she get her inheritance when her husband died if she was still living?  Now if I can just find info concerning one of my ancestors.
