My Genealogy Happenings over the last 6 months

During the past 6 months, much of my research has been focused on Old Hickory, Tennessee as I completed a few projects and added some new ones.  About 18 years ago when I'd designed my original genealogy website(hosted on Rootsweb's Freepages) I'd coded several pages which focused on my Dad, his parents & siblings, and the neighborhood in which he grew up.  My website was in bad need of updating and with Freepages pretty much going the way of the dinosaur, I made the decision to move my pages to my blog.  This sounds like a big project but seems to be going rather well.

What's been happening in my Genealogy World

• Moved my Confederate Pension Application Abstracts here to my Blog
• Studying the Clark Street and Dodson Street neighbors
• Found a TN State Supreme Court Case that my 2nd Great Grandfather was involved in and got a copy of it(41 pages)  Lots of people involved in the case which is about the sale of a horse.  Testimony given by my 2nd Great Grandfather about the horse was awesome to read.  The biggest surprise was the Dickson Co TN connection.
• Contacted Hagley Museum and Library to inquire about any Rental Records Dupont might have had from Old Hickory's Company Town Days.  They do not have them but did send me two reports done on another of Dupont's company towns to give me an idea of what all was involved with that process. (I contacted Dupont about it just to cover all bases and was told they didn't know the answer to my question.  Maybe contacting someone local will help)  If the Old Hickory Dupont plant still has them it would be a wonderful project and good PR for Dupont if they could let a Historical Society or TN State Library and Archives scan them.  I believe 1946 was the time when the homes were up for purchase.  Up until that point all the people that lived there pretty much worked for Dupont and rented from them. 
• Ordered my Uncle Morris' Official Military Personnel Files thru Veterans Voice.  I was able to get a discount on the order.(One of the perks of being a Virtual Genealogical Association member.) Excited to finally do that.  He has no descendants so I ordered his as my first order.  I hope to be able to order Dad's soon.
• Still working on trying to find the missing connection for my Cook(e) line.  I have Y111 DNA results and numerous autosomal testers.  Slowly but surely.  This past year has been a good one for finding out more information about our Cook(e)s and the ones that our DNA results suggest we most closely match.  I have our back to the 2nd Gr Grandparent level so I feel like there are likely about 2 generations in between the connection.   Time to make a grid for all the Joseph's we've collected from the same area...and another grid of the William C Cook or W.C. Cooks.  I know from past experience this works and when I get all of the grid filled out I will likely discover more information and have to redo it so I should do this like yesterday.
• In the midst of working on the Old Hickory projects I decided to contact the Register of Deeds here in Dickson County and get the listing of the people who owned the house that my grandmother lived in from about 1970-1976.  I have many great memories of the house on 203 North Charlotte Street and I even remember the neighbors.  I'm hoping to do a blog post on the house though I've written a good bit about it in the tribute to my Grandmother, Pearl Gray Jakes Cooke. 
• I've also been working on an archive notebook of the papers which my Grandmother Pearl saved.  You can read more about the types of papers and info at the linked blog post. 
• I hope to start on my own archive notebook of papers soon.
• Continuing to work my DNA matches and log genetic networks to help find kinship.
• Attending Webinars to further my Genealogy education. Enjoying the Genealogy Podcasts and blogs.  Also I'm looking forward to Rootstech though I will only be able to participate in the streaming portion of it.  I'm hoping there will be some great announcements by the sponsors.

23andMe Ethnicity Estimates Updated

While we've not done a test at 23andMe, my family was able to upload those who had tested at Ancestry during 23andMe's DNA day promotion in April of 2018. Those who uploaded do not get matches, but they have received the ethnicity estimates. 23andMe recently updated ethnicity estimates. A comparison of new to updated is shown below. I have deep colonial American roots on both sides of my family.  My daughter has colonial American on her Paternal Grandmother's side but she also has Germans coming to America around 1830 and English coming to America in the late 1800s.

In the name of God amen I Shem Cook
of said state and county being of
advanced age and knowing that I must
shortly depart from this world deem it right & proper
both as respects myself and my family that I should
make a disposition of the property with which a
kind providence has blessed me.  I therefore make
this my last will and testament, hereby revoking
and annulling all others heretofore made by me
Item First--I devise and direct that my body be buried
in a decent and Christian like manner suitable
to my circumstances and condition--my soul thus
shall return to rest with God who gave it as I
hope for eternal salvation through the blessed Lord
& Savior Jesus Christ whose religion I professed and
humbly trust enjoyed for 30 years.

Item Second--I desire and direct that all my just
debts be paid without delay by my executors hereinafter
named as I am unwilling my creditors should be
delayed of their rights especially as their(sic) is no necessity
for delay.

Item Third--I devise and direct that William Sutton
my son in law shall take my wife Temperance and
keep her, her lifetime and be paid for the same out
of my estate and if he fails to comply that arrange-
ments be made for the same.  Paid for out of my
effects.

Item Fourth--I give and bequeath to my son R.B. Cook
five dollars.

Item Fifth--I give and bequeath to Solomon West's
children that he had by my daughter Ann, five dollars

Item Sixth--I give and bequeath my negro property
to my sons James B & A.J. Cook and daughter Elizabeth
Sutton and Penelopy Yarber to be divided according to
valuation by lot, not sold.

Kimbro Allison Will (Beginning on page 170)

Know all men by the presence that I  Kimbro Allison of the
county of Bedford and state of Tennessee being sound in
mind but knowing the uncertainty of life do make
and publish this my last will and testament hereby
revoking all others and give and bequeath my property
as follows

First
For the love and affection I have for my wife Sally
Allison I give and bequeath to her so much of my
household & kitchen furniture as she chooses it
being not over one half of all of said household
and kitchen furniture.  And to her one horse or
mule--one cow 1 calf and one yearling(her choice)
also one year's provisions and I give unto my
wife Sally one half of the cleared land of the home
place(after cutting off the amount I will to my
daughter Nancy Gerald) upon which half I give
my wife will be the dwelling house at which I
now reside.  Also the use of the lots? and firewoods--
This land and lots are willed to her my wife Saly
during her life----

2nd
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Nancy Gerald
sixty-five acres of land to be ? as follows first
a certain field containing forty acres and bounded
beginning at a post  ? near J W Sheffield's house
running West Seventy-five poles to a stake, thence
North Eighty-five poles to Moses Fallwell's NW corner of
a fifty-acre tract thence South with the Fallwells line
Eighty-Five poles to the beginning.  Then  to cut off twenty
five acres out of a woods lot joining said field to
the North out of the South West corner of said lot.
It being north of said field so as not to r? further
north than half way of the woods lot.
The above two pieces of Land taken together making
the sixty-five acres of land that I alone intend
to give--and I give the said sixty-five acres of Land
to Nancy B Gerald and her bodily heirs for her
use and benefit during her lifetime, then to her bodily
heirs.  I also give to Nancy B Gerald one hundred
dollars to be paid her out of my effects on
hand at my death--

3rd
I give unto my son Richard S. Allison and my
daughter Sarah Whitaker all my Rail Road Stock
and twenty-five acres of lumber land lying near
Augustus Wilsons in Bedford County to be equally
divided between them, Half and Half.

Herbert is a painter for a Building & Construction Co. Connie Jones, (age 18) who is listed as Bro-in-law of Herbert also lives with them. He hauls coal & ice for a Coal & Ice Company. The Carters pay $8 a month in rent. All born in TN as were their parents.

Claude's sister Etta Gunter(age 19) also lives here along with her husband Fred(age 20) and son Fred Jr.(6 months old). Fred Sr was 19 and Etta was 18 when they married. Fred Sr. is asst. Trover Duke, a Railroad Employee

In November of this past year, I had the good fortune of attending a Legacy Family Tree webinar entitled Railroad Records and Railroad History: Methods for Tracking by Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, FMGS, FUGA.  In my research, I'd encountered streetcar operators but not any cousins or ancestors who worked for the railroad.  None the less I thought it would be good to know because you just never know when the opportunity to research a  railroad worker will arise.  One of my ongoing projects is identifying the people in old photos that were in my paternal grandmother's collection.   I'd scanned a small picture that was identified as Trover Duke-- a friend of one of my aunts.  As most of the people that were friends with Dad's family from the 1920s -1960s had ties to Old Hickory, TN  or the  Dupont Company, I had started a tree containing all of the friends, neighbors, and associates.  I searched for Trover Duke in the 1920-1940 census records.   Trover was in Tennessee until the 1940s when I find him in San Bernadino County, California working for the ATSF Railroad.  He's in the household of a widow, Margaret Black.

It shows his place of employment as the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad and lists his job description as Brakeman.  One key thing I also noted is that he was in the same house in 1935 so he has been in that location for at least 5 years.  My initial search using the main search at Ancestry didn't yield much beyond the previously mentioned census records.  Now I knew which databases might be most relevant and could search them individually.  So I headed to the Card Catalog and looked for records concerning Railroad workers.   I found his employment record in the California, Railroad Employment Records, 1862-1950.  I LOVE how much information this sheet gives.  I did not find him in the

I checked several other of the databases that the search pulled when I had searched on the keyword RAILROAD but didn't find a listing at least where I could tell that it was him.  I need to check some other sites for more information when I have more time.

Fleming and York-- Texas Confederate Pension Abstracts

Abstracts of information from Confederate pension applications of soldiers or widows. These applications were viewed from the microfilm collection of Wallace State College's Genealogy Collection (located on the 5th floor)at the campus in Hanceville, Alabama. I previously had these files on my Freepages Genealogy Website that was hosted at Rootsweb. You can now access some Confederate Pension index and in some cases, files at Familysearch.org (Log on required for some portions of the site but it is free) This post should give you an idea of the type of information found in those files. Please check out the digital images of the originals at FamilySearch for these and other pension applications.

Confederate Pensions were paid by the States not the Federal Government. Also, keep in mind that they were filed in the state of residence which may or may not be the state in which they served. Eligibility requirements vary from state to state. The states which paid Confederate Pensions were Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

The Texas Confederate Pension Index is online for free.  Ancestry has the Texas Confederate Applications available to subscribers in the Alabama, Texas, and Virginia, Confederate Pensions, 1884-1958 database.  Check with your local library.  If they have an Ancestry subscription you should be able to access it while visiting your local library.

life, but remained his true,

from any source whatever money or other means of suppport amounting in value above the sum of $300.00

exclusive of the home of the value of not over $2000; nor do I receive any aid or pension from any other

Personally appeared before me, A. F. Curtis, Clerk of the County 
Court of said County, Jesse Martin, who, being duly sworn, deposed 
as follows;  "I am 83 years of age since last October.  I have been 
a resident of Van Buren County practically all my life.  I was 
acquainted with Jerry Fleming during the Civil War.  Mr. Fleming 
was a resident of Van Buren County, Tennessee at that time.  I 
also knew the wife of said Jerry Fleming, She was called Polly 
Fleming.  She lives in Texas now.  Jerry Fleming is dead and has 
been for some time according to my information.  Said Jerry Fleming
inlisted(sic) in the Confederate Army from Van Buren County Tennessee.  
Said Jerry Fleming was granted a forlough and came home on it and he, 
together with some other soldiers, including my brother Noah Martin, 
was captured by the Federal soldiers and taken to Camp Chase.  The 
said Jerry Fleming was gone to the Army about one year before he was 
captured.  He remained in the service from the time he left home until 
he was captured while on a furlough home.  My understanding is that 
he was kept in Camp Chase until the close of the war.  The said Jerry 
Fleming was in Capt. W. B. Cummings' Company according to my recollection.

I found but his mind is bad and h can't sign up anything and is verry old.  
I hope this will be all you will need of course we are trying to get 
this under the new law which I understand don't go into affect until 
some time in June.

There are plenty people here who have known here from 40-50 years 
But the Judge said you don't want anymore so hoping she can get this.

I endlisted and served in the military serves of the Confederate States during the
war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate
service but during said war I was loyal and true to my duty, and never at any time
voluntarily abandoned my post of duty in the said service; that I honorably discharged

who are personally known to me to be credible citizens who being by me
duly sworn on oath, state that they personally know that Mrs. Lucinda York
applicant for a pension as the widow of Wm. M. York, deceased is in truth
and fact the widow of the said Wm. M. York deceased, that they further know 
that the said Mrs. Lucinda York, widow of the said Wm. M. York, deceased, 
is unable to support herself by labor of any sort.

I D. R. Pendleton county Judge of Bell County, State of Texas, 
do hereby certify that on the 18 day of August A. D. 1899, before 
me came on to be heard the application of Mrs. Lucinda York, widow
of Wm. M. York, deceased for a pension under the Confederate Pension 
Law of this State, approved May 12, A. D. 1899, that the answers 
of said applicant to the questions propounded were made under oath 
as the same appear in writing in the foregoing application; that 
the affidavits of the witnesses who are credible citizens were made 
before me as the same hereinbefore appear.  I also certify that the
said applicant Lucinda York is not disqualified under any of the 
provisions of Section 12, of the Confederate Pension Law.  I further
certify that after considering all of the proceedings had before 
me relative to the said application for a pension by the said Mrs. 2
Lucinda York as widow of Wm. M. York deceased, I find the said applicant
is lawfully entitled to the pension provided for by the Confederate 
Pension Law of this State, and I hereby approve said application.

We the undersigned members of the Commisioners court of Bell County, Texas
hereby certify that the foregoing application of Mrs. Lucinda York, widow
of Wm. M. York deceased, for a pension together with the proof in support
thereof, was duly submitted by Hon. D. R. Pendleton County Judge of this 
Bell County, to the Commisioners Court of this Bell County regular term
thereof on the 14 day of August A.D. 1899, and after a careful consideration 
of the same we find the said applicant is lawfully entitled to the pension 
provided for by the Confederate Pension Law of this State, and we hereby 
approve said application.

Answers of the Witness:

To the 1st Int. the witness saith:
My name is R. P. Baker

To the 2nd Int. the witness saith:
My age is 74 years and I live in Parker County Texas

To the 3rd Int. the witness saith:
My Post office address is Weatherford Texas

To the 4th Int. the witness saith:
I am not personally acquainted with Mrs. W. W. York, who is an 
applicant for a pension

To the 5th Int. the witness saith:
I was personally acquainted with Wm. M. York for a few months 
while he and I were in the Confederate service in the 19th 
Texas Calvary, Co. E. 

To the 6th Int. the witness saith:
I know personally that Wm. M. York did enlist in the Confederate 
service and performed the duties of a soldier.

To the 7th Int. the witness saith:
I know personally that said Wm. M. York enlisted in the Confederate 
army in Co. E 19th Texas Calvary, Burford's Regiment, in the spring 
of 1862.  He remained in that command until I left it in the November 
following.

To the 8th Int. the witness saith:
I do not, know that said Mrs. York is the widow of Wm. M. York.  I do 
not know, but I have understood that York went to Bell County.

To the 9th Int. the witness saith:
I know nothing of her ability to support herself by labor.

Answers of the Witness

To the 1st Int. the witness saith:
My Name is B. L. Richey.

To the 2nd Int. the witness saith:
My age is 68 years, and I live in Parker County, Texas.

to the 3rd Int. the witness saith:
My Post Office address is Weatherford, Texas.

To the 4th Int. the witness saith:
I do not personally know Mrs. W. W. York, who is applicant 
for a pension, that I remember, though I may have known her 
several years ago.

To the 5th Int. the witness saith;
I knew Wm. M. York personally in Parker County, Texas, when 
he enlisted in the Confederate army in March 1862, had known 
him for quite a while before that time, and knew him during 
the entire war.  I do not know the date of his death, but I 
understand that he died some time in the 70's.

To the 6th Int. the witness saith:
I know personally that Wm. M. York enlisted in the service 
of the Confederacy, and performed the duties of a soldier.

To the 7th Int. the witness saith:
Wm. M. York enlisted in Co. E. 19th Texas Cavalry, Nat M. 
Burford's regiment and served from the time of his enlistment 
until the end of the war, about three years, I know this personally.

To the 8th Int. the witness saith:
I can not say wheter the applicant is the widow of Wm. M. York.  
I suppose she lives in Bell County.  York moved from here to 
Bell County, and I had letters from him after he went there.

To the 9th Int. the witness saith:
I don't know whether the applicant is able to support herself 
by labor or not.
